A successful charging-station project begins with understanding the site before selecting hardware. If electrical capacity, vehicle movement, access, connectivity and the operating model are not assessed together, later corrections can increase both cost and lead time.
1. Electrical Infrastructure and Power
- The facility’s contracted and connection power together with current peak load
- Available capacity at the transformer, main board and distribution boards
- Simultaneous power demand based on the number of AC or DC units
- The option to distribute capacity dynamically through load management
- Suitability of earthing, protective devices and metering infrastructure
The nameplate rating alone is not enough. Vehicle acceptance rate, other loads on the site and the number of stations operating simultaneously must be modelled together.
2. Layout and Cable Route
Define charging bays
Assess cable reach, charge-port positions across different vehicles and manoeuvring room together.
Measure the cable route
Record the distance from board to charger, trenching or tray needs and any fire compartments.
Reduce impact risk
Plan barriers, wheel stops or bollards without obstructing access to the charger.
Design wayfinding
Position bay markings, signs and lighting according to the driver’s approach direction.
3. User Access and Safety
The station should be visible from the entrance, easy to find and adequately lit for night use. Pedestrian routes, accessible use, cable trip risks and emergency working space should all be included in the site plan.
